Phase 2: Discovery

The Goal

To take a deep look at the current state of your website. We want to understand what content you have, how it’s performing, and where your users are getting stuck or lost.

The Benefit

Knowledge is power. By identifying what’s working and what isn’t, we can make data-driven decisions about what to keep, what to delete, and what to improve. This prevents us from spending time on pages that few people visit and allows us to focus on the content that matters most to your audience.

What to Expect

The Content Audit

We’ll pull a full list of every page and file (like PDFs) on your current site. You’ll help us categorize them using the ROT (Redundant, Outdated, or Trivial) system so we know exactly what we’re working with.

On average, 30–50% of a legacy website is ROT. If you move all of that into your new site, you’re just moving trash to a new house. We recommend aiming to remove at least 30% of your current pages to ensure your most important content actually gets seen.

The Technical Check-up

Our team will run scans to find broken links, accessibility issues, and performance obstacles.

Analytics Deep-Dive

We’ll look at the data to see where your visitors are coming from, which pages are top performers, and where people are hitting a dead end.

Forms Identification

We’ll list every form on your site to ensure we have a plan for how they will function in the new design system.

Tips for This Phase

Be Ruthless with ROT

If a page hasn’t been updated in years or gets zero visits, it’s a prime candidate for removal. Likewise, if the content is owned or managed by another unit, you should link to their source rather than recreating it. Remember: the more clutter on your site, the harder it is for users to find the essential information they need.

Think Like a User

Try to look at your site through the eyes of someone who has never seen it before. Is it easy to find your contact info? Is the language too insider-heavy?

The Timeline

Typically 2–3 weeks. This depends largely on the size of your current site and how quickly your team can review the content inventory.
